Oregon's World-Class Windsurfing & Kiteboarding:

Hood River is the most popular location for world-class kiteboarding as well as windsurfing. Winds average 20 mph during the warmer summer months and gusts can reach up to 25-30 mph. Because the wind blows upstream, kiteboarders can ride across the river while maintaining position. Crossing the Columbia is dangerous because of the passing barges, hidden flotsam and currents, and should be tried only by the experts. There are plenty of spots for beginners to choose from though. The winds at Hood River are consistently excellent from June through September. The air temperature is usually 70-80 degrees with a cool water temperature of 55-60 degrees.
